What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve is a bariatric surgery performed by laparoscopic methods to remove 70 – 80% of stomach to restrict stomach capacity and thus lead to gradual weight loss. As a result of gastric sleeve the ghrelin hormone is also reduced whereby hunger is suppressed. The gastric sleeve surgery does not lead to extensive physiological or anatomical changes and is the most preferred method worldwide.

Preparing for Surgery

1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
2. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
3. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
4. The patient should quit smoking and avoid alcohol before the procedure.
5. Specific dietary guidelines provided by the surgeon must strictly be followed before the surgery.
6. Patients must stop taking Aspirin, all other NSAIDs, arthritis medications, blood thinners, Omega 3 supplements and herbal teas before surgery.

The Surgical Process

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia laparoscopically. Small incisions are made in the abdomen whereby 70 – 80% of stomach is removed via vertical stapling and remaining stomach is formed into a narrow tube (sleeve). The operation helps suppress the feeling of hunger and patients feel full with much less food given the reduced capacity of the stomach. The surgery takes 1-2 hours.

The Post-Operative Process

• Swelling, bruising and nausea are normal after the procedure.
• Pain is expected and is manageable with medications.
• Specific dietary guidelines provided by the surgeon must strictly be followed after the surgery.
• You may get back to work 2-3 weeks after surgery.
• The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.
