What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also referred to as a "boob job" is a cosmetic procedure to give breasts a fuller and symmetrical look. Breasts may be small in size due to a variety of factors such as underdevelopment, weight loss and pregnancy. Breast augmentation is performed with silicone implants or fat transfer.

Preparing for Surgery

  1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
  2. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
  3. Blood tests will be carried out before the operation.
  4. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
  5. Smoking should be stopped 3 weeks before surgery.
  6. Use of alcohol is advised against last week before surgery.
  7. Patients must inform the surgeon of any use of Aspirin and all other blood thinners.
  8. Breast ultrasounds and mammography should be conducted before surgery.
  9. The operation is advised for patients who are aged 18 and above.
  10. The operation should be postponed for patients planning for pregnancy in the near future or in case of continuing breastfeeding.

The Surgical Process

The implants are placed through 4-5 cm incisions made under the breasts. The implants are placed either under the breast tissue or under the muscles in front of the rib cage.

The operation takes place under general anesthesia and lasts around 1 hour. Patients usually stay at the hospital for 1 night following surgery.

The Post-Operative Process

  • After the operation 1 night admission in the hospital may be required.
  • Tightness, tenderness and numbness after the operation are normal.
  • Pain and swelling will subside a few days after the operation.
  • The breasts will be wrapped with dressing, which will be removed 2 days after surgery. After the dressing has been removed, a sports bra must be worn day and night for 3 weeks.
  • You may get back to work 3-4 days after surgery.
  • It may take 4-6 months for the breasts to take their final shape.
  • The operation does not prevent breastfeeding.
  • 1 year after surgery breast ultrasound/mammography should be repeated.
  • The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.
