What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also commonly referred to as "nose job", is a surgical procedure to correct nasal deformities. It is performed for both aesthetic and functional purposes to address breathing difficulties and concerns with the shape of the nose.

Types and Methods of Rhinoplasty

Primary Rhinoplasty

Primary rhinoplasty refers to all first-time nose surgeries. Patients who have never had any previous nose surgery fall under this category.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct flaws and unwanted results of previous nose jobs. Compared to primary rhinoplasty, it is a more complicated operation requiring a lengthier recovery. In order to reshape the nose and correct deformities from previous surgery, extra cartilage may be taken from the patient's rib or ear. To be eligible for a revision rhinoplasty 1 year must have passed from the date of your previous surgery.

Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty Method

In open rhinoplasty an incision is made under the nose between the nostrils (across the columella). Additional incisions may be needed during surgery depending on each patient's unique situation. Open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon to better manage inner structures of the nose and ensure the best possible outcome. The scar from the incision will be minimal and barely visible with time.

In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made in the nostrils and remain inside the nose. Closed rhinoplasty is popular among patients since there is no visible scarring outside the nose due to surgery. With this method, the skin and soft tissue are damaged less which leads to a quicker recovery.

Ultrasonic (Piezo) Rhinoplasty

Ultrasonic (Piezo) rhinoplasty is a surgical method that uses ultrasonic waves to reshape nasal bones with milimetric calculations. Unlike conventional methods, bones inside the nose are not fractured and nasal tissue, nerves and veins are not harmed in any way. It is accepted to be one of the most reliable methods for rhinoplasty. After Piezo rhinoplasty, complications like swelling, bruising, bleeding and pain are extremely rare.

Barbie Nose

As its name suggests, Barbie nose rhinoplasty is preferred by those who wish to have a doll nose. As a result of Barbie nose rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose is tiny, slightly curved and upturned. The procedure is usually performed as an open operation.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a non-invasive procedure where filler injections are made to reshape the nose. It only takes a quick visit to the doctor's office and is mostly preferred by patients who would like to avoid surgery. The results are temporary, lasting from 6 months to 2 years and the appearance needs to be maintained with repeated injections.

Preparing for Surgery

  1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
  2. The surgeon will make simulations of the possible post-op appearance and choose the most suitable surgery method for each patient's unique case.
  3. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
  4. Blood tests will be carried out before the operation.
  5. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
  6. Rhinoplasty is not performed to those under 15. The procedure is performed after the cartilage development has been completed.

The Surgical Process

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Primary rhinoplasty takes around 1 to 3 hours. Revision rhinoplasty may take 2.5 to 3.5 hours on average depending on the specifics of each case.

The Post-Operative Process

  • After the operation 1 night admission in the hospital is required.
  • Light bleeding and pain that responds well to painkillers after surgery is normal.
  • Most of the visible bruising and swelling will subside by the end of the first week.
  • Tampons will be removed 5-6 days following the operation.
  • You may get back to work 5-7 days after surgery.
  • It takes around 6 months for the nose to take its final shape.
  • The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.
