What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is the removal of skin and tissue to reshape and create smaller breasts. Large breasts may cause back pain, rounded shoulders, rash and fungal infections under the breasts and limit physical activity. Breast reduction surgery will lead to aesthetically pleasing results with smaller and lifted breasts, improve the overall physical condition and boost the patient's confidence.

Preparing for Surgery

1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
2. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
3. Blood tests will be carried out before the operation.
4. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
5. Patients must stop taking Aspirin and all other blood thinners, Omega 3 supplements and herbal teas.
6. Some antidepressants may tend to cause bleeding. Patients should inform the surgeon of all regular medications taken.
7. Breast ultrasounds and mammography should be conducted before surgery.
8. The operation is advised for patients who are aged 18 and above.

The Surgical Process

The surgical method and incision type will be determined by the shape and size of breasts, size and location of nipples, extent of sagging, skin quality, level of excess skin tissue and skin elasticity. The surgeon will decide on the most suitable incision for each patient's unique case. Periareolar , vertical scar and reverse T incisions are majorly used for breast reduction surgery.

The operation is performed with general anesthesia and lasts for around 2.5 hours.

The Post-Operative Process

• After the operation 1 night admission in the hospital is required.
• Numbness due to swelling after the operation is normal.
• Pain after surgery will be mild and easily manageable.
• The breasts will be wrapped with dressing and drains will be in place after surgery. The drains usually intimidate patients due to misinformation however the drains used are rather thin and are no cause for concern.
• You may get back to work 1 week after surgery.
• The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.

Risks and Possible Complications of the Operation

Although very rare, there are some risks associated with breast reduction surgery:

• Bleeding
• Infection
• Temporary or permanent loss of nipple sensation (The surgeon as expert on breast anatomy makes all the effort to preserve the nerves leading to the nipple. However these nerves are invisible to the naked eye and surgical methods oblige surgeons to depend on estimates on the nerves' trajectories. Although rare, temporary or permanent loss of nipple sensation may arise.)
• Excess Scarring: Plastic surgeons pay great attention to suturing to leave minimal scars. However factors like individual differences in healing are beyond the surgeon's control. While some patients heal with barely any scars, others may experience red and raised scars. There are many scar treatments available in such a case and the most suitable treatment will be applied.
