What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants, made of titanium or zirconia are used in case of a missing tooth and act as a screw or root on top of which an artificial tooth is placed. Dental implants replace missing teeth in a much more natural and durable way compared to other alternative treatments like dental bridges and regular prostheses.
Titanium implants are more flexible, long-lasting and durable whereas Zirconia implants allow for a more natural look and are hypoallergenic.
How long is the Dental Implant process?
The dental implant process begins with an in-depth consultation with your dentist and screening tests are carried out. The implant is later placed with local anesthesia to the jawbone and the surgical site is left to heal for around 3 months. After the healing period, a cap will be placed over the implant to the gum with local anesthesia. 2-3 weeks after the cap placement, the artificial tooth will be placed.
For patients who do not have sufficient bone density of the jawbone, bone grafting may be necessary before placing the implant. After bone grafting it may take several months for the jawbone to develop sufficient bone density before the implant process can be started.
The entire dental implant process usually takes between 3-6 months but some patients may need longer periods for healing and bone grafts.
How is the recovery process of Dental Implants?
After each step of the dental implant process, swelling, pain and bleeding are to be expected but are easily managed with medication and care instructions provided by the dentist.
How long do Dental Implants last?
Dental implants are meant to last a lifetime however in some rare cases the dental implant surgery may fail due to a variety of causes. In that case the dental implant or the the dental crown over the implant may be replaced.
