What is Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct protruding ears. Protruding ears are not considered as a fuctional medical problem, however they may lead to cosmetic and social concerns for patients.

Preparing for Surgery

1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
2. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
3. Blood tests will be carried out before the operation.
4. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
5. Children after the age of 6 and adults can undergo otoplasty.

The Surgical Process

In children otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. In adults local anesthesia and sedatives may be sufficient. During surgery, cartilage is reshaped from either the back or front of the ear.

Otoplasty may take 45 to 90 minutes on average depending on the specifics of each case.

The Post-Operative Process

• Hospital admission is generally not required.
• The incisions made during surgery remain invisible behind the ears.
• Following surgery bandages are placed over the ears and will be removed after 1-2 weeks.
• You may get back to work 3-4 days after surgery. Children can get back to school 1 week following the operation.
• The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.
