What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a dental procedure to get rid of discoloration of the teeth and to provide a harmonious, whiter color to all the teeth. Teeth discoloration may be a result of tea, coffee consumption, tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, use of some medications, various health conditions and aging.
How is Teeth Whitening Performed?
Teeth whitening may be performed with either at-home kits or in-office procedures carried out by the dentist. In-office teeth whitening gives much quicker results and proves to be more effective. Peroxide based bleaching products are applied to the teeth and UV light is used (laser teeth whitening). In-office teeth whitening takes approximately 1 hour.
How is the aftermath of the Procedure?
Minor sensitivity of the teeth is normal after teeth whitening and will subside in 1-2 days.
Patients must not consume tobacco products, tea, coffee, red wine and all other colored fuzzy drinks like Coke and sodas for the first 2 days after teeth whitening.
Your dentist will recommend specific toothpastes to maintain the results.
How permanent is teeth whitening?
How long the results of teeth whitening will last changes from patient to patient. However, good oral hygiene and abstaining from all products that stain teeth like tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, coke and other sodas are essential. Results of teeth whitening last anywhere between 6 months to 2-3 years.
