What is Eyelid Lift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty is an operation to lift eyelids by surgically removing sagging skin and excess muscle tissue. It can be performed on both upper and lower eyelids. Upper eyelid operations target sagging, droopy eyelid mostly caused by aging or genetic factors, whereas lower eyelid surgery eliminates undereye bags. Blepharoplasty is mostly performed on patients aged 35 and above, however younger patients with droopy eyelids due to genetic inheritance are also candidates for surgery.

Preparing for Surgery

1. Online and in-person consultations will be made to examine the patient, assess the medical history and to discuss the patient's expectations.
2. The doctor will make note of allergies, chronic diseases and regular medications used by the patient.
3. Blood tests will be carried out before the operation.
4. The anesthesist will have a consultation with the patient.
5. Use of medications like Aspirin and antibiotics must be ceased 15 days prior to the surgery, due to an increased risk of bleeding. Likewise, patients are requested to stop the consumption of cigarettes and tobacco products 2-3 weeks before the operation. Herbal supplements should also not be taken due to their unexpected effects.

The Surgical Process

For the upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made to remove the excess skin and muscle tissue. To prevent scars the incision is made over the crease line of the eyelid. The lower eyelid operation, on the other hand, is performed right under the eyelashes. The skin is lifted and the fat pockets are dispersed in the eye sockets.

The operation takes 1-3 hours and may be performed with general or local anesthesia.

The Post-Operative Process

• Hospital admission is not required.
• Bruising and swelling is normal 1-2 weeks after the operation.
• Stitches are removed 6-10 days after surgery.
• Scars will disappear over 4 – 6 months.
• You may get back to work 1-2 weeks after surgery.
• The surgeon will be available for online and in-person consultations after the surgery for necessary follow-ups.
